Balanced People resources are based on CBT – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. The theory around CBT is that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are interconnected and influence each other. Negative or unhelpful thoughts can contribute to negative emotions and unhealthy coping strategies, creating a vicious cycle. Very simply put, CBT aims to break the negative cycle by looking at your thinking patterns and using a variety of techniques to help you reframe them.

CBT is well evidenced and recommended by the NHS, and it’s good for people to use on a self-help basis. However, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution or a magic cure for everything. Here are some reasons why self-help CBT might not be for you.

 

Complexity of your issues

While CBT can be effective for mild to moderate anxiety and depression, it might not be sufficient for more severe cases like PTSD, bipolar disorder, or psychosis. These conditions often require a more comprehensive approach involving therapist-guided therapy alongside medication.

 

Motivation and discipline

CBT requires active participation and consistent effort to identify and challenge negative thought patterns and practice new behaviours. Good CBT, like Balanced People, will help with motivation and reminders to stay on track. However, if you really struggle with motivation or self-discipline, you might find it challenging to stay on track with any CBT self-help program.

 

Confronting discomfort

Facing and challenging negative thoughts and emotions will make you feel uncomfortable. If you struggle to deal with feeling uncomfortable it’s called having a low level of discomfort tolerance and this can make people stop. You have to be prepared to challenge yourself and feel uncomfortable in the process – it is temporary.

 

Limited guidance and accountability

Self-help resources often lack the personalized feedback and guidance offered by a therapist. It’s kind of linked to motivation as well. Not having a regular appointment, and accountability, can lead to procrastination.
